If you’ve been working for days on a lovely charcoal or pastel drawing, the last thing you want to do is frame it or store it away without protecting it with some fixative first.
Fixative is quite similar to varnish in that once applied it will help protect your drawing from being smudged or marked accidently, but will not affect the finish of the drawing. Fixative can also be used in between layers of a drawing to allow for subsequent layers to be added without affecting the drawing beneath.
Fixative is available in a variety of brands including Daler Rowney and Winsor & Newton and can be used in an aerosol can form available in a small selection of sizes or alternatively in a liquid form that can be used with a spray diffuser for those who can’t abide the odour of solvents.
