Last night saw the start of Artstore’s degree show marathon. We kicked off proceedings by popping along to Glasgow’s Pacific Quay to the impressive Creative Hub Digital Design Centre: the venue for Reid Kerr College’s end of year show ‘We are Designers and Artists’. It’s an inspiring venue, not to mention a far more interesting space than the usual classroom setting.
The talented bunch of Reid Kerr students organised the entire show themselves, and deserve a pat on the back for creating such a professional and enjoyable show, as well as providing their guests with a thoroughly pleasant evening.
The show comprised mostly of Graphic Design and Architectural Interiors with a smattering of Portfolio Prep from the Fine Artys – whose own official show opens at the Paisley Museum on the 9th of June. Overall, the show was of a high standard, with some interesting work on display, although we were a wee bit disappointed to see the majority of work contained on student laptops, which somehow does not have the appeal of casually browsing through portfolios… we love a good rummage through the artist’s thought process!
We have high hopes for this lot, who now have the skill set to start shaking things up. In today’s challenging environment, we’d like to see Glasgow’s young artists and designers tackling the real life issues rather than fictional fragrance packaging or shop interiors. What about a new image for the troubled Banks that really says “trust us”? Or a rethink of the car park that George Square has become? We could do with some radicals to prove that art really can make a difference and deserves both government funding and respect.
Congratulations to all involved and we hope you enjoy every minute of the show, but remember this is only the beginning. The show looks great and we wish you all every success in the big, bad, beautiful world of art!
