Winsor & Newton's range of oil painting varnishes give an excellent choice of effects and finishes, as well as a choice of mostly non-permanent varnishes that can be removed if required, or some permanent varnishes.
Varnishing your painting after completion is highly recommended to protect it against dirt, grease and general wear & tear, but remember to leave even the thinnest oil paintings to dry for at least 6 months before varnishing, as shrinkage and cracking can appear if varnished too early.
Winsor & Newton Dammar Varnish is the glossiest of the gloss, being the traditional high-gloss varnish that dries quickly, is pale yellow in colour and darkens gradually with age.
It has also traditionally been used on prints and maps.
